The transition from CRT displays to flat panel displays continues to accelerate, driven by the continuing information technology revolution and the ongoing conversion from analog to digital in the 21st century. Today, displays are becoming rapidly larger and flatter as the high-definition, high resolution HD digital terrestrial broadcasting network becomes reality.
Plasma display panels (PDP) in particular are creating a new image culture as thin flat displays for household TV and commercial monitor use that deliver amazingly beautiful images. PDPs are fueling outstanding growth in the Japanese display market, and are expected to become a major pillar for the nation's display industry.

It is expected that the screens of thin televisions will rapidly become larger and produce higher definition as digital high-definition broadcasting services become more available around the globe, as the use of Blu-ray and other high-definition devices, and high-resolution digital video cameras becomes more widespread, and as wireless technology and other peripheral technology develops and is incorporated into communication. At the same time, we also believe that the range of demand will expand even further as medical, education, public institution, and other business applications increases, which will fuel the need for greater display capabilities.

The Advanced PDP Display Development Center Corporation (APDC) was established by five PDP display companies in July 2003, for the purpose of jointly developing next-generation PDP base technologies. In 2005 we were able to demonstrate the possibility of an increase in energy consumption with amazing emission efficiency in excess of 5 lm/W. Then in 2007 we succeeded in developing 0.1mm cell pitch technology (which was one-third that of the existing cell pitch at the time), to support the high presence displays (60-inch, with at least 2000 scan lines) that are predicted for the future.

APDC remains committed to our industry-university activities and to building a research system that centralizes the integrated power of the Japanese PDP industry. With the low-voltage technology for panel drive voltage as our main focus, we will continue to develop panel component material technology, process and equipment technology, panel design, and drive technology. We also will advance our basic technology research, aiming at creating a PDP capable of low-drive voltage operation that delivers better power efficiency and lower cost.
